Dancer Studio Portraits
Are you ready for these dancer studio portraits? I know I am! Each year I hope to have at least one dancer on my Tacoma Model Team, and this year I got to shoot with a whole group! How lucky is that? I love free-flowing sessions like this which allow the girls to show off their talents and hard work. With every new session, I am blown away by how impressive each of these young women are. Going through the carousel of photos, you get to become a part of a private performance prepared especially for this shoot. The lines between dancing and posing are blurred, leaving us with a magical image that lies somewhere in between. How special is that?
Why Dancers Make Great Models
If you didn’t know, dancers are some of my favorite people to photograph! They have the ability to capture the camera’s attention so well. From years of practicing in the studio, they are closely aware of how their bodies move and how to pose to get exactly the look they want. It makes posing them so easy and fluid! All the dancers I’ve worked with love to have fun and it shows in how they push the limits during their sessions. From delicate floor poses to jumps, splits, and everything in between. Dancers are just natural models! I am so excited to have shot with a group of such talented young women and see their dancing skills up close!
Using Natural Light in the Studio
Most of these portraits were taken in Studio253. One thing that makes our studio unique is our gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows on the far wall of our shooting room. If you haven’t been yet, you have to stop by! We are on the second floor of our Downtown Tacoma building, which means we don’t have any other structures blocking the sun! We get access to beautiful light all year long. Even on rainy days (which happen A LOT in the PNW), we are still able to get considerable amounts of natural light into our portraits. While we create some AH-mazing looks with artificial light, there is something so special about a sunlit portrait. It gives the models the freedom to move around the studio without stopping to worry about lighting placement and gives the photos themself a timeless touch!
Second Story Portraits
Our windows serve a double purpose as well. Unlike new buildings, the windows open all the way out. They aren’t just decorative, but so cool to use in our portraits too when one of our models asks! Of course, safety comes first. We make sure the models are secured in two different places inside the studio before they are allowed to pose out the windows. And then, we start shooting! It takes a brave soul to be open to taking portraits in an open second-story window, but the photos are always worth it! So what do you think, are you brave enough to try?
