Picking Your Senior Portrait Location
Many upcoming seniors worry about how to select their senior portrait location. Unless you have a specific spot in mind, it can be tricky to figure out where you want to go, what will look best, and if you are even allowed on certain properties. That’s why I created this How-To blog to help seniors (and their families) select the best spot for them and provide examples from a variety of great Washington locations in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Let’s get started finding you the senior portrait location that fits your style!
Your Senior Portraits Your Way
The best advice I can give when it comes to picking your senior portrait location is to start by envisioning what you want your photos to look like. Not what is trendy, not what your friends did, not even what your parents think would look good. But what YOU want for YOUR experience. We want to ensure that these photos stand the test of time and are true to your style. That is the first step! After that, then you can get advice from the people in your life and look at examples.
Finding High-Quality Examples
Pinterest is probably the number one resource I recommend to seniors planning their portraits. It has endless pins in different styles and locations so that you can get a wide variety of examples. Once you find the photographer you like, it is also a great idea to look at specific examples from their website, social media, or blog. You probably did a bit of this when selecting them as your senior photographer to begin with, but having a strong sense of what you like and dislike will go a long way in ensuring you get exactly what you want out of your session time. Plus, it will help your photographer! Just make sure to be open to trying suggestions from them too. You picked your photographer for a reason! They know what they are doing!
Selecting Your Individual Style
Once you get your board full of examples, it’s time to select your own style! You probably have a good sense of your style already, but now is the chance to match it with the right location. What season you booked your session for may be a big factor in where you end up shooting your portraits. Beach pictures in the sun are gorg, but beach pictures in the cold are no fun. I am always open to seniors who want to brave the cold to get their shot, but keeping the weather in mind when you plan your portraits will lead to a much better experience for everyone!
Matching Your Outfits to Your Location
Picking your style has more to do with just weather though, it is also about what you want to see in the background of your photos! Do you like the more urban, city vibes or do you prefer a rustic country shoot in a tall grass field? Maybe you love flowers or fall leaves. OR maybe an outdoor shoot isn’t for you at all and you are more comfortable with an in-studio session. Whatever your location, you want to make sure your outfits and style match and feel like you. Luckily, all of our AHP senior experiences come with a complimentary style consultation to help you select the outfits that will be perfect for your session! You bring in your outfits and we decide together what will work best at what location and most importantly, what you feel the most comfortable in. After all, that is the real end goal! Planning the best, customized, senior portrait experience for Y-O-U! And I can’t wait to get started!
